17 Morton East students, juniors and seniors, are currently enrolled in the Certified Nursing Assistant certification program at Morton College.
According to Morton College, its Nursing Assistant Program prepares students to perform basic patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. Additionally, the program is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and prepares graduates to take the state-approved competency examination for certification as a CNA.
The prerequisites include being at least 16 years old, achieving a placement test minimum of 64 in English/Reading and 77% in Arithmetic, and passing a criminal background check. The duties of a CNA through this program involve providing basic care services such as bathing, feeding, mobility assistance, and environmental care under the supervision of a nurse. Forty hours of clinical work are also required for this course.
Students share why they enrolled in the CNA program.
“I’m interested in the CNA program because it allows me to have an insight into healthcare or the medical field since it’s one of my interests. Even if I don’t end up pursuing a career in the medical field, it allows me to expand my knowledge, gain experience, and have valuable skills that I can apply in my personal life. The CNA program also gives me the opportunity to help others and develop skills that are crucial for work settings in my future, specifically knowing how to deal with different people,” said Morton East senior Ashley Hernandez.
This enthusiasm for the CNA program is echoed by other students who view it as an important first step toward their career goals.
“What interested me in the CNA program was to help get a kick-start to my career. I also wanted to see what working in the medical field was like. My plans after receiving my certificate are to pursue more of the medical field and hopefully find a job relating to it,” said Morton West junior Viridiana Aguirre Leon.
Similarly, other students share the same motivation and passion for learning about the medical field through the CNA program.
“I’m interested in the CNA program to get a head start in healthcare and to be able to have hands-on experience with patients and expand my knowledge regarding healthcare,” said Morton East junior Marely Avitia.
Many students agree that the CNA program offers valuable experience and insight into the medical field.
“I signed up for this CNA program because it’s a good opportunity to get into the healthcare field, and it’s good experience I will get for my future career,” said Morton East senior Monserrat Orozco.
