A significant number of Morton East students are seeking greater opportunities to get involved.
In a random survey of 100 Morton East students, students were asked if they believe they should have more of a voice in the school community. 93% of students said yes, while 7% of students answered no.
Morton East High School recently had a student panel, and students shared their ideas. Some ideas shared included more field trips, student parking options, and student emergency pillars (blue light phones). Administration is considering more opportunities for students to get involved next year and be able to share their opinions. According to ChatGPT, when students take part in panels, councils, or advisory boards with school leaders, administrators get direct feedback from the people most affected by school policies. This can lead to improvements in areas like school rules and discipline policies, mental health support programs, extracurricular activities, and clubs.
“Personally, I think student panel discussions would not be a bad idea. I feel like a lot of students here have great opinions but don’t express them,” said senior Imanol Villaseñor.
Another student shares a similar opinion.
“If students don’t have an opinion, the district is going to do whatever they want. So, it would be nice for students to be able to share what they think and have those opinions be taken into consideration,” said senior Victor Mercado.
Another student added on, saying,
“We are the ones being affected by the decisions made by the administration. If the students disagree with the decisions being made, they will act in disapproval, creating more issues for the staff and people in charge,” said senior Janette Ayala.
