Students split on upcoming election

Trump versus Biden is a nailbiter — at East too!

In this survey that we conducted, we asked which person respondents would rather vote for: Trump or Biden?

We received 48 votes for Trump and 52 for Biden.

But first, let’s look back into the past of these two. On a website called Britannica, Trump was born in 1946. “Trump was a real estate developer and businessman who owned, managed, or licensed his name to hotels, casinos, golf courses, resorts, and residential properties in the New York City area and around the world. From the 1980s, Trump also lent his name to scores of retail ventures—including branded lines of clothing, cologne, food, and furniture—and to Trump University, which offered seminars in real estate education from 2005 to 2010.” In 2015, Trump decided to run for president and won in 2016.

On the same website, the background of Joe Biden says, “Joe Biden (born November 20, 1942, Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S.) 46th president of the United States (2021– ) and 47th vice president of the United States (2009–17) in the Democratic administration of President Barack Obama. He previously represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate (1973–2009). In April 2023, Joe Biden formally announced his bid for reelection as president in 2024.”

Both Joe Biden and Trump have stances on undocumented immigrants. Wikipedia states, “On January 23, 2021, Biden introduced an immigration bill to Congress. As introduced, the bill would give a path to citizenship to 11 million undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States.” This tells us that Joe Biden would be willing to help undocumented immigrants. A CNN website says, “Former President Donald Trump is planning a widespread expansion of his first administration’s hardline immigration policies if he is elected to a second term in 2024, including rounding up undocumented immigrants already in the US and placing them in detention camps to await deportation, a source familiar with the plans confirmed to CNN.” This tells us that he would get rid of undocumented immigrants, unlike Joe Biden, who would provide them with help.

What is the reason you would vote for Donald Trump or Joe Biden?

Gustavo Villegas, a sophomore student, said, “The reason why I would vote for Biden is because he seems helpful from what I know.”

Ulises Amernas, a junior student, said, “In my opinion, I favor Trump because he said that he would stop the war in Ukraine and Israel.”

Jean Mojica, a junior student, said, “Biden has my vote because he said that he would help undocumented immigrants.”

Israel Angles, a senior student, said, “Trump seems like my pick because Biden made the economy bad.”

Kent Frankfother, a teacher, said, “While no candidate is perfect, I plan on voting for the candidate that seems most aligned to me and the communities I support.”

There are some places where you can vote, for example, you can go to the Cicero Public Library to vote.  So, register and cast your vote for the candidate of your choice.

I enjoyed reading this article because majority of students in Morton East can’t legally vote, but they still have opinions on the Presidential rematch that people have known would happen ever since Donald Trump lost in 2020. I’d rather not give out my opinions on the topic but it is nice to see the opinions of others, even if I don’t agree with them.
