The Mariachi Club recently performed at the Morton East Winter Concert where jazz, freshman band, and choir also participated.
The Morton Mariachi Club meets after school at Morton East High School. The purpose of the club is to teach students about mariachi music and give them a chance to learn how to play an instrument they may have never played before. According to general research, one interesting fact about the Morton East High School Mariachi is that it captures eyes every year and gets more students interested in joining. The adviser and leader of the Mariachi band, Mr. Cervantes, decided to create a welcoming environment where students can learn, grow, and express their culture through music.
“Mariachi has always been part of my life, and leading this program allows me to share that tradition with students,” said Mariachi adviser Mr. Cervantes. “Through Mariachi, students don’t just learn music, they learn confidence, pride in their culture, and how to support each other while representing their school.”
In addition to the adviser’s perspective, students in the Mariachi Club shared what the program means to them and how it encourages others to get involved. One student explained the goal of the club, saying, “To share Mexican music with the school, and persuade students to get encouraged to maybe join our Mariachi band to learn any instruments if they are interested,” said Liliana Navarretes.
In addition to the adviser’s perspective, students also share how the Mariachi Club helps get more students involved in music. One student explained that the club is meant to involve students and help them start early in music, especially if they want to become musicians in the future and begin their career.
Students also shared how the Mariachi Club helps get more students involved in music, in addition to the adviser’s perspective. One student explained the purpose of the club by saying, “This club is to involve students to get them into music, and if in the future they would want to become musicians they could start early to be able to start their career,” said Samuel Diaz.
