Students from J. Sterling Morton East shared their thoughts on prom 2026 — from dress colors and trends to opinions on the venue and theme. Prom season has spring dancers everywhere thinking about style, budgets, and how much to spend on the perfect look.
Prom dress trends for 2026 include sleek satin fabrics, clean silhouettes, corset‑inspired bodices, high slits, and statement backs, designed to be flattering and photogenic under lights and in photos. Jewel tones like emerald and violet — along with metallics and sequins — are coming in strong, alongside classic ball gowns and structured fits that celebrate individuality.(Faviana)
The average teen prom budget in 2026 typically ranges between about $250 and $600 overall, with the dress itself usually being the biggest expense. Most shoppers spend money not only on the dress but also alterations, shoes, accessories, hair, and makeup.(Mondressy)
Student Responses
One student described their color choices and thoughts on the theme.
“I’m planning on either wearing pink or green. I like the theme, it’s really cute, I’ve been wanting to do that theme. That theme is really pretty,” Senior Evelyn Mondragon said.
Another student shared similar prom thoughts and budget plans.
“I’m thinking of wearing a rose gold dress. The theme is better than it was last year, I kind of like it. I’m kind of excited to see what people are going to wear. I hope people wear masks. I’m willing to spend 200–300 on the dress, because it’s one night,” Senior Tatiana Sanchez said.
A third student mentioned concerns about scheduling and attire.
“Yes, I’m going to prom. My color is purple. I think that they should let us wear masks because that’s the whole theme. But I feel like the school isn’t going to let us wear masks because they have to see our faces. I think masquerade is a good theme, it’s very prom‑esc,” Senior Keilani Toledo said.
Prom Committee Perspective
Mrs. Samata, prom coordinator, spoke about affordability and shopping options.
“I haven’t heard anything about the school offering cheaper dresses, but I’ll investigate it, and it will be on the prom website. I’m always a fan of secondhand shopping. A lot of people donate. Women will get rid of clothing options. You could look at consignment stores, secondhand stores. For online shopping you could check out Poshmark, Mercari, or even eBay where you can find nicer things but at a discounted price. I feel like I don’t always pay attention, but I do notice color trends, and I feel like black is going to be very popular for dresses. I know that my color scheme for décor will be silver and black with a pop of red. Every year students ask to do masquerade, and I don’t want to do it, one, because it’s a theme that has been done before, but I gave in and I’m happy to do it and I think it’s really cute. Another reason I didn’t want to do masquerade is because I didn’t think anyone would wear masks because when I would ask students they would say no because they didn’t want to ruin their makeup or hair. This year everyone will have a mask. I bought masks and they’ll be table décor but also able to wear it. You’ll be able to wear masks, but they will be removed to check in. There is going to be some live entertainment. It will happen during dinner service,” Mrs. Samata said.
