Most Morton students enjoyed their homecoming dance with their friends.

According to Chatgpt, Homecoming dances have been a cherished American high school tradition for decades, typically held in the fall to celebrate the return of students and boost school spirit. Homecoming dances feature a variety of festivities, with the most significant being the crowning of the homecoming king and queen. These events are not limited to dancing; they also serve as the backdrop for various themed decorations, from ‘Under the Stars’ to a ‘Masquerade Ball.’ Leading up to the homecoming dance, students participate in a week of activities often referred to as ‘spirit week’ and pep rallies. Homecoming dances also provide students with a great opportunity to showcase their creativity through their outfits. Homecoming dances have become a cherished tradition in all America.

In a random survey of 100 students, 59 stated they attended with friends, 17 with a date, and 24 indicated they would not be attending the homecoming dance at all.

“When selecting a theme, we consider student interest and recommendations, taking into account previous years’ themes to maintain originality. Some other themes we considered included ‘Harry Potter Homecoming,’ ‘Big Screen (Movies),’ and ‘Under the Sea.’ Planning for dances usually involves arranging for music (both live bands and DJs), selecting decorations, and securing other external vendors. For instance, this year, we are including a mechanical bull,” English teacher Angelica Samata said.

Choosing a theme for homecoming can be challenging, but selecting the right one can be even more difficult. However, for many students, the theme is not the most crucial aspect; it’s a time for them to have fun with their dates and friends and enjoy their high school dances.

“Homecoming last year was a truly enjoyable experience as I attended with my friends and was able to relive our teenage years. In a way, it reconnected us and positively affected our friendship. Homecoming has become a nostalgic memory for me when I look back on my junior year,” senior Jeanette Villegas said.

For students like Jeanette Villegas, homecoming was a memorable experience and a great way to reconnect with friends. Similarly, for students like Gabriel Suarez, it offered unique and enjoyable activities.

“My previous homecoming dance was a lot of fun. We had what was called a mosh pit in the field house, and we got to participate in unique activities,” senior Gabriel Suarez said.

Being one of the first school activities that students attend with their friends, homecoming is a memory that they’ll cherish forever.

“I attended homecoming last year with a few friends, and I truly enjoyed myself because it was one of the first school activities I had gone to with my friends,” senior Josselyn Murillo-Moreno said.

For some students, simply spending time with their friends was the highlight of the dance.

“I found the theme enjoyable, and I really relished spending time with my friends and dancing,” Junior Daisy Ambelis said.

O’Malley – I disagree about students enjoying the homecoming dance due to others not feeling included because it had nothing to do with their race or culture. My opinion on it was that next time homecoming comes around they should allow us students to do a poll for different themes so no one feels left out.
