We asked Morton East students if they find Valentine’s Day overrated. Most said no, but some said yes. Here are their opinions.
In a survey of 100 Morton students, 67 said that Valentine’s is not overrated, while 33 said it was. According to Google AI Overview, 64% of Americans find Valentine’s Day overrated because it’s highly commercialized and creates pressure to spend money. The other 36% feel it’s a nice holiday to express love to their loved ones.
Sophomore Melisa Castellanos shared her perspective:
“No, I don’t think Valentine’s Day is overrated. I think it’s a nice little holiday to celebrate; it gives you a reason to go out. In case your boyfriend doesn’t want to, you still have a reason to go out because it’s Valentine’s Day. I wouldn’t say there are standards for Valentine’s Day, but I do believe both partners have to contribute something,” said Melisa Castellanos.
Her classmate, Angela Campos, had a similar opinion:
“The standard for Valentine’s Day is to ask out your valentine a couple of months before. The least they could do is give them flowers or a teddy bear,” said Angela Campos.
Not everyone agreed. Leo Cabrales offered a different point of view:
“I feel like Valentine’s is a little overrated. Some girls set their standards high and expect a lot. I’m in a relationship, so for Valentine’s I’m going to take her out to eat and get her flowers — something simple. I feel like you don’t have to overdo it all the time. As a guy, I feel like you shouldn’t expect anything,” said Leo Cabrales.
Paola Ramirez, however, had a more positive view of the holiday:
“I don’t feel like Valentine’s Day is overrated. A lot of people like to celebrate it; it’s a really cute holiday to celebrate love. This year I’m not having Valentine’s Day, but if I did, the bare minimum would be some flowers. Nothing too big; I would just be happy with some flowers,” said Paola Ramirez.
Alexander Villegas shared a similar opinion to Paola:
“No, Valentine’s isn’t overrated. I think it’s a good way to express your love to the people you care about. I feel like the guy should do stuff for his girl, but sometimes it’s good for the girl to buy him something or do something special that day,” said Alexander Villegas.
Even some staff members shared their plans and thoughts about Valentine’s. Damien, a security staff member, talked about his own celebration:
“My anniversary is on Valentine’s Day. This year marks five years. This Valentine’s I’m going to Alinea, a fancy restaurant in Chicago. No, I don’t think there should be standards; it should be natural. You shouldn’t have to expect something from a person,” said Damien.

I like this article because I agree that Valentine’s Day is about showing love to the people in your life, and it doesn’t have to be just for a partner.

I like this article. I agree and think that Valentine’s Day is a day to express love to people in your life. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a partner

Reading this article was nice reading. My opinion about valentine is that it isn’t really overrated since it’s not only about couples but also friendships.
