A: “I had a rough experience as a kid, and I wanted to help kids because of that.”
Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?
A: “The students. Getting to talk to them and having the chance to help people feels good.”
Q: How long have you been working in this field, and how did you get started?
A: “This is my fourth year as a school social worker. I started with a first-year internship at a middle school.”
Q: Are there any licenses, tests, or certifications required for your job?
A: “To become a school social worker, you need a master’s in social work. Afterward, you take a test called the PEL (Professional Educator License).”
Q: Where did you go to school or get your training?
A: “I completed my master’s at the University of Chicago.”
Q: How long did it take you to complete your education or training?
A: “You need a bachelor’s degree, which takes 4 years, and then my master’s took 2 years.”
Q: If someone wanted to do what you do, what would be their first step after high school?
A: “You don’t have to major in social work. Study social sciences or humanities, and then pursue college. It’s important to study a broad range of subjects.”
Q: What advice would you give to someone in high school who wants to follow the same path?
A: “Just do it. Hold on tight; this profession needs new, fresh young people.”
