Most students say they find school to be harder after a break.
In a recent quick survey of 10 Morton East students, eight students said that school is harder after a break, and two students said that it is not. According to ChatGPT, studies show students can lose up to about 20% to 30% of their learning gains in subjects like reading and math during long breaks. This means that when students are away from school for a while and aren’t going over what they learned, their performance level can drop.
“The hardest part about coming back to school is getting back into the rhythm of waking up early and preparing for school,” said senior Nicolas Zaragoza.
Teachers say breaks don’t really have a negative impact on learning pace.
“I think breaks are necessary; breaks should not have a negative effect on students if teachers are planning ahead. In culinary, we plan ahead for breaks so we know what to do, and students are aware of what is coming up,” said culinary teacher Chef Herrera.
