Most students say their grades do not show what they know in school.
In a recent quick survey of 10 Morton East students, eight students (80%) said that grades don’t show what they know, while two students (20%) said that they do. According to the University of San Diego, focusing on feedback rather than just numerical grades can improve students’ performance.
“No, my grades are bad, but I’m better at stuff outside of school, like welding and sports, so there’s more to life than school,” said senior Daniel Becerra Muñoz.
While adults believe that students’ grades depend on what they know, some disagree.
“Yes, the grades represent the effort that a student is willing to put into school and their work,” said social studies teacher Ms. Alyssa Anselmini.
