Last year, Morton East’s Civic Leaders of America or CLA club won the Club Olympics, and this year they are sending a project to Washington, D.C.
The club was formed to host satire and serious debates on controversial ideas. CLA tends to meet after school every Tuesday in Room 125. The group has approximately 40 members. Their goal is to inform club members of their civic duties and the power that comes with them.
“I oversee the cabinet’s decision-making and assist in organizing fundraisers,” said club sponsor Ms. Anselmini.
So, the sponsor keeps an eye on the cabinet, and the cabinet keeps an eye on what’s best for the club.
“Through advocacy, dialogue, and critical thought, we learned that our voices carry power—and that power is best used to uplift others,” said CLA cabinet member Nahir Garcia.
In addition to the coach’s/adviser’s perspective, members also shared their experiences, and they are currently preparing for “We The People”—a nationally recognized debate competition—in early January. As well, the Civic Leaders of America hope to raise enough funds to take CLA to Washington, D.C.
