Zodiac Signs

Do you believe in astrology? It can help you steer your way through relationships, jobs, and school.

In a survey concocted of 100 Morton East students, more than 50% said they do not believe nor know about astrology/horoscopes.  Astrology is seen as a way that one seeks validation from their self-identity or how they think about themselves. The point of astrology or zodiac signs was to predict a person’s personality by using the 12 zodiac signs. Zodiac signs first started in the 1st Millennium BC, and the Babylonians were the ones said to have created them by dividing the sky into twelve areas, each of which was assigned a figure, a name, and specific meaning. Horoscopes first started in the 3rd millennium BCE.

“I think a lot of people believe in zodiac signs because they relate to the descriptions and the beliefs. Because they can relate to it, they believe the zodiac signs are a reality and they apply to their lives. Therefore, for some people it might, it just depends on how much they believe for them to be true. I don’t think people should depend on it heavily because life can change instantly, and this will avoid people experiencing disappointments,” said Spanish teacher Ms. Esmeralda Ortiz.

S0, is believing in zodiac signs really a good idea?

“I don’t personally believe put much weight into zodiac signs, so you’d probably have to ask someone who does to figure out why they do. But from an outside perspective, I think people like to feel a sense of belonging and need to validate who they are, so zodiac signs can validate people’s personalities, interests, behaviors. I do think that some zodiac traits can be similar to self-fulfilling prophecies. In some cases, I think people can start to behave in certain ways or change their personalities based on how their zodiac sign typically behaves,” said history teacher Ms. Alexis Couch.

However, there are people who do believe in zodiac signs like this Morton senior.

“People believe in zodiac signs because they find them fascinating and enjoy exploring their personality trait and predictions. When people read their horoscopes or identify with certain traits associated with their zodiac signs, it can influence their thoughts and behaviors, it can shape their experiences and outcomes,” said Senior Alize Delgado.

“It can bring out one another’s personality traits, being able to explore the spiritual world.

“People believe in Zodiac signs because they are fun; comparing characteristics and seeing if you fall under them is enjoyable. Years ago, people were taking Buzzfeed quizzes, which most of us would say were pretty silly but entertaining. Similarly, we like to look up our Zodiacs and see what the day will bring. They don’t have a self-fulfilling prophecy, but they force people to look at their actions and attitudes more critically; it’s reflective, in a way. I don’t believe in them, but I like talking about them because it’s a great conversation starter. People should not depend on their zodiac signs but should analyze their actions and attitudes; it’s an excellent way to check ourselves,” said civics teacher Ms. Sophia Sandoval.

“I’m not sure why people believe in zodiac signs. I think people believe in them for different reasons, but one could be that we like to learn about ourselves and have ways to be grouped with others ‘like us.’ I don’t think Zodiac signs have as much of a self-fulfilling prophecy as much as a term called the ‘Barnum Effect.’ Basically, horoscopes give very general advice and descriptions. People want them to be accurate, so they take the general description and believe it is describing a very specific thing about them. I think Zodiac signs can be fun, but no, I do not think people should depend on them. We make our own choices and personalities. They’re fun to compare or read about, but they should not be used for serious decisions,” said social science teacher Mr. Ryan Fischer.
