In a random survey of 46 Morton East High School students, 30 students (or 70%) said they didn’t go to homecoming because they were “protesting” — but many students didn’t attend homecoming dance because they had to work.
According to an AI overview from Lycée Français de Chicago, 190 students attended their 2025 homecoming dance, and amusingly, many students did not go to homecoming. Thirty students did not go to homecoming, and sixteen students went to homecoming. In total, 46 students were surveyed in Morton High School. Locally, individual school events reported homecoming dance attendance figures of around 600 to 1,000 students. Many people didn’t go home because they were busy, lived too far from school, didn’t feel like going, or because of the humanity that is going on this year.
Some students were busy with other plans such as work.
“I did not go to homecoming because I had to go to work. Also, I believe the protesters’ voices should be heard loud and proud,” said senior Angle Lopez.
Another upperclassman felt the same way.
“I did not go to homecoming; I did not have anyone to go with. I also did not go to the parade because I had to work — but I was in support of the protest,” said junior Aracel Polino.
Some just wanted a free day to do what they’d like.
“I wanted the day off, so I did not attend the school homecoming. I also did not attend the homecoming parade because I had other plans,” said staff member Damien Jimenez.
Some students just didn’t want to participate.
“I did not go to homecoming because I did not want to, and I did not go to the homecoming parade. I also did not attend the homecoming protest because I did not know about it,” said sophomore Christian Baylon.
Others attended the homecoming and had a lot of fun. And participated in the parade.
“I did go to homecoming; it was fun and I enjoyed it. I was also in the homecoming parade walking for my language arts class. I also support the protesting because the protesters are defending the students in our school, and I’m glad they are being heard,” said sophomore Aiden Gallegos– Opposing Team.
