Don’t forget your furry friends!

Winter poses potential problems for family pets

Dogs love the snow! But they can get frostbite if left unattended.

As the holidays approach this year, we all must be cautious about what we put in our homes for decoration, especially for those of us who own pets.

According to Vetstreet.com, one of the most common pet emergencies reported to the vet is gastritis. Sometimes, this can happen because pets help themselves to some holiday snacks, such as peppermints, which are a usual candy sorted out through Christmas. Peppermint is an extremely dangerous candy for pets as it can cause vomiting and diarrhea. There are other ways to keep your pet safe.

“If we humans can wear jackets, gloves, and scarves, so can our pets,” Zoology Teacher Ms. Berezniaz said.

Another way to keep your pets safe during the winter is by using specialized salt for pets. For example, the normal blue salt used during the winter is toxic for your dog’s paws.

“I try to avoid using the blue salt. I have read it can cause a chemical burn for your pet’s paws,” Zoology Teacher Ms. Bereznaiz said.

Any dog owner knows salt makes your dog crazy!

“I was walking my dog, Zac, across a busy Chicago street last year when he must have stepped on salt or got ice in his paw. He freaked out, started whining, and fell on his back in the middle of the street. Fortunately, the cars stopped to let me pick him up; I can’t imagine what would have happened to him if he was off leash,” English teacher Mr. Frankfother said.

There is a popular plant during the season that many people display in their homes, and these are mildly toxic for your furry friends!

“Poinsettias are poisonous for dogs – and maybe cats too. So, I always put mine up off the floor, away from where my dog can get at it; he has the tendency to chew on houseplants every now and then,” English teacher Mr. Frankfother said.

As we all take our dogs on walks during the winter, it can be a bit difficult.

“During the summer, I take my dog out on walks constantly, but unfortunately, during the winter, our walks are very short because it’s way too cold for his paws. I tried to put on little shoes for him, but he does not like it,” senior Jimena Betancourt said.

I like how your article states the importance of pets during winter, many people aren’t aware of dogs getting frostbite and hypothermia because they believe that dogs are more resistant to the cold than humans are.
