The origin of holiday parties

So, where did the holiday party originate?

Holiday parties have been going on for many years, such as winter festivals in Saturnalia Ancient Rome and Yule in Scandinavia. Celebrated with feasts, gift-giving, and merry-making, this formed a foundation for many modern holiday traditions. Some unique food traditions from diverse cultures are shown in holidays like Italy, where a common feast of 7 fishes on Christmas Eve is prevalent, while in Japan, KFC is seen as a common Christmas meal. A historical connection is the practice of giving gifts during this time at parties. Around the world, Secret Santa and White Elephant gift exchange have become popular for fun and surprise gatherings. After Christmas, parties occur on New Year’s Eve. Often, these times are for reflection, celebration, and setting goals for the upcoming year. These are great ways to spend time with those who are close to you and engage in fun activities.

Many enjoy spending the holidays during this time with their family or close to them, engaging in fun activities to bond together.

“They bring people together to do fun activities and create an opportunity to bond with those around you. My favorite holiday memory is when my family came over for Christmas in 2020,” said Senior Sofia Arroyo.

Others enjoy spending time together before the holidays, decorating the home to show some spirit for this holiday season.

“We pick a color for the decoration, and my mom, sister, and I decorate the whole house, including the outside,” said Senior Shanael Branch.

Some may not enjoy it, or it may not be common in their home to have traditions during these winter times, but they still enjoy the holiday dinner together.

“My family doesn’t really do traditions on holidays; we mostly just meet up on the holidays and have dinner,” said Senior Zaria Jinadu Markin.”
