Luis works as a security guard at Morton East High School, where he has been employed for 8 years. He completed his training at Morton East High School and has been in the security industry since 2017.
Here’s what he had to say about his job.
Q: What training did you have to do to undergo security?
A: “First, I had to get a blue card and various different types of training. The most recent training that kind of bundled a lot of it together was called PROACT training. Every year, we have to do a yearly training that’s a refresher on everything—from medical situations to emergency situations.”
Q: How do you assess potential threats at our school or outside of our school?
A: “Every day we do what we call a perimeter check, so we are constantly checking the perimeter doors. So if you ever see us moving students away from our doors, that’s pretty much what we’re doing—making sure the building’s secure.”
Q: What advice do you have for the student to keep the school safe?
A: “Don’t open doors for anyone. Always wear your ID, ’cause not everybody knows everyone. We have 3,000 to 3,500 students from sophomores to seniors, so we don’t know everyone. So if you wear your uniform and ID—especially your ID—that helps us clear the halls.”
Q: What technology do you use for surveillance and safety monitoring?
A: “The building cameras. We have cameras on the inside and outside. And we use our phones now—like when you ask for the SmartPass, we have your picture on there with your name. So for example, if someone has someone else’s ID or an old student ID, we would know right away.”
Q: How do you handle bullying or suspicious activity?
A: “So first and foremost, anyone that reports that—we always have to go to the dean so they can give a full report of what’s going on. But usually, I mean, I’m always open to listening. But that’s above my pay grade. We have to have somebody from counselors or deans be involved to see how that would work out.”
