Who was Cupid?

So, Cupid’s arrow is headed your way!  But be careful, it might not be what you wish for — you might want to dodge.

Cupid uses his bow and arrows to make people fall in and out of love.  If he wants to make someone fall in love he uses his gold-tipped arrow and fires it at a person.  But, if he wants to make someone fall out of love (or even hate someone) he uses his sliver-tipped arrow. (What color is coming your way?)

First, Cupid is a boy — the god of desire, erotic love, attraction and affection.  (Cupid means desire!)  There are many versions of Cupid’s origins, depending on the culture. The most common that we associate with today is the Roman version. Cupid was the child of Venus, the goddess of love and Mars, the god of war.

But, in other cultures, Cupid is believed to be born asexually — like he came from an egg — from Venus.  In Greek mythology, Cupid is known better as Eros, where he is the son of Aphrodite the goddess of sexual love and beauty, and Mercury the winged messenger of the gods.
