Morton East offers early dismissal classes to students with a few requirements.
According to the assistant principal of operations at Morton East, the numbers of sections of hybrid civics classes next year depends on student interest and who qualifies under the criteria. Currently at Morton East, we have the following: 2 students have early dismissal periods 3 thru 6, 5 students have early dismissal periods 4 thru 6, 28 students have early dismissal periods 5 thru 6, and 65 students have early dismissal period 6. These hybrid classes do not promote students taking an early class like zero hour in order to leave early. Zero hour is not a requirement if a student is trying to take hybrid civics. Requirements to be able to get this hybrid class are a grade higher than a B during your junior year US History class, time management skills, and a goal of going to college. In a random survey of 100 Morton East students, 76 students reported they knew about a class or classes that have early dismissal, and 24 students reported they didn’t know about any early dismissal classes.
“Civics is the only class that has a ‘hybrid’ option of students meeting only several times a week and the other times students work on their own time. They have a late arrival or early release. As established by the social science department, the criteria for this course are a B or higher in US History, great time management skills (turns everything in on time), and going to college is a goal,” said assistant principal of operations Dr. Michael Parrie.
With civics being the only class that has a hybrid option, counselors don’t know if Morton East will be adding more hybrid options.
“I have no idea how many students have ED. Only Blended Civics is partially remote, and I have not heard that the school will be adding more blended classes anytime soon,” said counselor Monica Melendez.
With civics being the only partially remote class and students having early dismissal, many enjoy early dismissal due to having more time to themselves.
“I personally think that early dismissal is great. It gives me the opportunity to get schoolwork done earlier. And it allows students who work to get to their job on time if they start at 3:30 or even 4:00,” said senior Emaley Delgado.
Many students agree that early dismissal is great, giving students a chance to get to work on time with enough time to do schoolwork.
“Early Dismissal is one of the best things ever; it allows you time for yourself and to work on responsibilities you might have after school, it gives you time to relax and prepare yourself!” said senior Diego Vazquez.
Early dismissal gives many students the opportunity to have time for themselves and for after-school activities like programs and clubs.
“I like having early dismissal. I like that it gives me an extra hour to be at home and have more time for myself. It’s very helpful for me since I need to go home and take care of things and as well as having to do homework I get from school and the program I am currently enrolled in,” said senior Karla Lopez.
