Another Valentine’s Day doing nothing?

Valentine’s day, spending it alone or with your significant other? Many Morton East students don’t even plan on doing anything special, for them it’s just another regular day at school.

Valentine’s day is celebrated in many ways, but at Morton East, students plan on spending it with their significant other or doing nothing this year.

Lupercalia was an ancient Roman Festival; It was celebrated every year to honor Lupercus, the god of fertility. Over the years Lupercalia was turned into Valentine’s Day after Emperor Claudius II executed two men both named Valentine on February 14th. Valentine’s Day has been around since the 14th century. 250 million roses are grown, and 8 billion conversation hearts are manufactured just for Valentine’s Day. In a survey of 30 Morton East students, 13 students said they were celebrating Valentine’s Day while 17 said they weren’t celebrating.

When interviewing a Morton East student about what their opinions were on Valentine’s Day, they said it was a good day to show feelings towards someone.

“It a good day to express my feelings towards my girlfriend and show her how much I care and love her.” Anonymous Morton East junior said.

While others will be spending the day with their significant others some people will be spending Valentine’s Day as if it were just another day.

“I’m not going to be doing anything special on Valentine’s Day or spending it with anyone.” Anonymous Morton East Sophomore said.

One senior also said he had some plans for Valentine’s Day.

“I’m going to buy my girl some flowers and take her out to this Japanese spot. I’m looking forward to just enjoying that afternoon with her.” an Anonymous Morton East senior said.

While another student said he had a plan to ask his girlfriend to be his Valentine.

“Since my girlfriend is in poms, I plan on asking her to be my Valentine on her senior night. I got her flowers and made her a poster; for Valentine’s day I plan on getting her flowers and taking her out to eat at a downtown restaurant we always like to go to,” Morton East senior Brian Cruz said.
