Two Morton wrestlers recently beat state qualifiers — senior Nico Jaramillo and junior Santiago Moya.
The Morton wrestling team meets Monday–Saturday in the balcony gym. Monday–Friday, they practice from 4:00 p.m.–6:10 p.m.; on Saturdays, they practice from 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. The group has approximately 36 people or more. The purpose of this sport is to push yourself to your limits, knowing you aren’t tired, your body just thinks you’re tired.
The season record so far this year: Overall: (2–7), Conference: (1–1).
“In the past two weeks, we have wrestled some very strong teams. We are aiming to, and doing the work to, peak at the end of the season for the IHSA State Series. We have wrestlers that have set goals to qualify for the state final tournament. According to general research, it’s one of the few sports where athletes compete against others of nearly the exact same size due to strict weight classes,” said coach Mr. Dan Levy. “We have two wrestlers that have beaten past state qualifiers: Nico Jaramillo at 126 lbs. and Santiago Moya at 175 lbs. We have many other wrestlers that have put in off-season work to show their development, and they have shown their improvement,” coach Levy added.
According to coach Levy, it’s time to work hard and attain goals that wrestlers and coaches have set.
“The prediction for the rest of the season is that we will continue to work hard, get better, and qualify 14 of 14 wrestlers for the IHSA Sectional tournament,” said coach Levy.
Coaches are trying to help students be the best that they can.
“My main goal in wrestling is to stay strong and healthy so I can perform at my highest level while learning valuable life lessons, such as the skill to keep going while it’s hard,” said junior Santiago Moya.
