The Morton Wrestling team continues to push through a demanding season, showing dedication, growth, and rising momentum as they train six days a week at Morton East.
The Morton Wrestling team meets up Monday–Saturday at the balcony gym in Morton East. The group has approximately 30 members. The purpose of the club is to have fun and get to learn a few things in wrestling and get a good workout out of it. Last year, the club accomplished a lot of things; for example, last year many of our students’ won tournaments in their weight class. This year, they are going strong through the season. A couple losses, too, are needed to improve and learn. Goals they have are to advance onto state and prove they deserve a spot being there. According to general research, one interesting fact about high school wrestling is that high school wrestling is ranked as the 6th most popular sport for boys in the U.S.
“We’re building more than wrestlers, we’re building young men who learn to push through discomfort, stay disciplined, and trust the process. Every drill, every rep, every tough practice adds up. If they keep showing up with heart, the work will pay off, and they’ll see just how strong they can become,” said Coach Alonso Baldereas.
In addition to the coach’s perspective, members also shared their experiences.
“As a senior, I’ve stepped in that role where hard work needs maturity. I’ve learned from every setback, I have pushed myself past my limits, and now I’m leading an example to the future of this Morton wrestling team. This year is about finishing strong, win or lose, but most importantly to prove that all the hard work and early mornings, tough matches, and dedication were worth it. My growth shows what happens when you commit fully,” said senior Sergio Garcia.
