Gangs at East? We don’t think so

Students don’t think the school has a gang problem.

We did a survey of 60 people and 38 people said they don’t know for sure that there are gangs in school and the other 22 people said that they know that there are gangs in school.

“I do believe there are some kids around here that do believe they are part of gangs, and they love to act like it in school, but I don’t think kids really realize what kind of trouble that is and the magnitude that being in a gang really sets,” Mr. Doogan a sociology teacher said.

Others believe that people just make assumptions about the Cicero community on past history.

“I just don’t see kids in Morton doing these things; I just don’t believe kids around here can be in gangs because they know they would be getting themselves into.  The rules on it are kind of confusing since sometimes kids are messed with (by gang members) but have no affiliation to gangs; people just assume they (are in them then),” Anala Rangel, a senior, said.

Some people did not believe at all that kids around here are even considering gangs.

“Nah, there’s no way kids around here actually know what they are talking about.  They just don’t get what it means to be in a gang they just want to say they are for the sake of being in school and acting cool around their friends,” Mr. Yunker an auto teacher said.
