Teacher uncertainty is worst part of online teaching

Teachers not knowing if students are really learning seems to be the worst of teaching online.

According to Daily the Aztec “Opinion: Online classes are not effective in educating students” by Catherine Van Weele, there is a lack of willingness and desire to learn. Students are simply not motivated in online classes. They are typically easy A’s and are time efficient, but student learning outcomes tend to be lackluster. Students simply complete their assignments to receive credit for a passing grade, rather than genuinely engaging with the course material. Currently, many teachers and even students think this way, many teachers believe that most students are not really learning while doing remote learning. In a random survey of teachers and students 20 out 29 believe that the worst of teaching online is that teachers do not know if students are really learning the lessons they are teaching.

“It is hard to make my students work out and not be there to motivate, guide and correct their posture and technique.  I know that I can do that in person but it’s almost impossible online. I miss the relationships that I build with my students.  Working out is about getting physically fit, building self confidence and engaging socially.  I miss all of it. I believe that some students that are truly motivated are learning but other are disinterested.  For example, a good teacher can change an unmotivated students attitude towards a subject/topic/school in person butt I think online school makes that difficult for them,” PE teacher Mr. Romero said.

In the past, PE teachers have different physical activities for the students and now being online, it’s a little difficult to do those types of activities and for students to participate and turning in their work.

“The hardest part of teaching online is getting students to participate and turn work in. (This only applies to some students.) Being around people. I feel that students are learning if they put in the effort and try. For example, students who participate in class and reach out to their teachers are learning,” marketing teacher Ms. Stefano said.

Currently, if students put their part during class it possible for them to learn but if they do not comment, ask questions or answer them when the teachers ask questions the students are never going to learn.

“The worst teachers go through alone is students not communicating with them and seeing how effortless students are through remote learning. Teachers are doing their best and students are loosing motivation, often teachers think it’s their fault but in reality it’s the students. Also during remote learning I also feel like it’s the hardest part for them when they want to have a class conversation and get totally ignored by their students. Honestly, no students aren’t learning through remote learning. There is a lack of motivation and trying to work on their mental health. Students get easily distracted by the smallest thing and do not pay attention. It’s harder to get up in the morning and stayed focused 8hrs a day on the screen,” senior Lupita Rubio said.

Usually, students get distracted during class and when doing homework. It is hard for students to stay on the screen during class and after class but at the same time, it is the same as if they were in school. Teachers do not know if kids leave their computers on and just leave to go do something else or go to sleep.

“Less participation from the kids than before. They don’t know if people are actually behind the screen. I think it’s the same. That they don’t know if there is people on the other side of the screen or if they’re sleeping. If they are explaining the topic well enough. I think they are. But I also think that being at school would be better,” senior Yesenia Hernandez said.
