How many East students are Republicans?
February 7, 2020
In a survey of Civics and Economics teachers and classrooms at Morton East, 12% of student identify as Republicans.
According to their Civics teachers, out of a total 312 students at Morton East, 276 identify as Democrat and 36 students identify as Republican — that’s 12 % of students saying they are Republican. To determine this, students in Civics class visited different websites that surveyed them and then determined which political party they identified with.
Civics teacher Mr. Parry Doogan “guesses that 10 to 15 percent of students (at East) are Republican.” Another Civics teacher, Ms. Joselyn Davila, said that she thought about “15 to 20 percent of students might be Republican.”

Personally as a republican that tends to be more outgoing, I believe that many of my fellow republicans are simply afraid of the possible consequences of doing so. I do believe that there are those that are radical on both sides, like for example, there’s the alt-right including horrible organizations like the KKK or anti-Semite groups that are largely against minorities and other small groups. These groups seem to be the only parts of the right wing that get shown to people nowadays instead of the majority who hold morals and values without question in comparison to their alt-right cousins. So in essence, there may even be 25-30% of students who do identify with Republicanism.
