Killers nurtured, not natural, say students

The majority of Morton East students think that serial killers are created by the world around them.

Serial killers have dated back centuries. In a historic survey, serial killers would have to begin at least as far back as the Roman emperor Caligula, who derived great pleasure in torture and murder. A serial killer is a person who has murdered three or more people over more than a month, with a cooling-off period between murders. Countries that have the highest number of serial killers are in the United States with 76% of the world’s total. Some famous serial killers from the Midwest are Jeffrey Dahmer from Wisconsin and John Wayne Gacy from Des Plaines, Illinois. Both serial killers had more than 10 victims and most were males. In a random survey of 120 Morton East students, 86 said that life experiences contributed to what makes a serial killer.

“There is a unit called the abnormal unit. Disorders are not found in every killer. Some people do have them, but there is no danger. It is when they do have a disorder and it gets extreme that is when people should be worried,” Psychology Teacher, Mr. Fischer said.

Adding on to that, many people are interested in how smart serial killers are in society.

“They are incredibly smart and can have an emotional disconnect from society,” Psychology Teacher, Mr. Fischer said.

But people think that serial killers are created by the world around them.

“Life experiences because they might’ve had an abusive/ rough past,” AP environmental Teacher, Ms. Berezniak said.

It might seem like killers like Jeffrey Dahmer are on the decline.

“(In the future) there will be more attention drawn to (serial killers) and it will make it more obvious (and harder to commit these crimes),” junior Cesar Martinez said.

Although, Jeffrey Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy got away with most of their crimes. One police officer was suspended for returning a  dazed and naked 14-year-old boy to Jeffrey Dahmer who was later killed.

“The most popular serial killer I know in the Midwest is Jeffery Dahmer because he would make stuff from collected body parts,” senior Jesus Romero said.
