“A bittersweet ending is the best ending. I think this because it leaves the watcher with mixed emotions. The watcher doesn’t know if he should feel happy or sad which is the biggest impact. So, a bittersweet ending makes the biggest impact, which is why it’s also the best ending to a romantic movie,” said Senior Andrew Arteaga.
Bittersweet endings appear to be a popular choice, as many have decided it’s their favorite way for a romantic movie to conclude.
“I think bittersweet endings make a bigger impact because it’s more realistic. I mean yeah there are times where happy endings are more enjoyable but if you really think about it closely, no relationship is perfect and ever will be. So, by having bittersweet endings, it allows the audience to face reality that there will be ups and downs in the relationship, it’s just how you solve them together that allows the relationship to continue to do well,” said Senior Allan Correa.
While some people believe that bittersweet endings make a bigger impact by reflecting the realities of relationships, there’s something about the comfort of watching a movie at home that allows you to fully engage with these themes.
“I rather watch movies at home because of the fact that I’m more comfortable and don’t have to worry about paying for snacks at the movies and being able to pause the movie and not miss any of it,” said Senior Joselyn Flores.
Additionally, the privacy of home means they can enjoy the movie without distractions or the pressure of adhering to strict movie theater etiquette. On the other hand, some teens are drawn to the experience of watching movies at the movie theater, where the large screen, high-quality sound system, and more.
“I prefer to watch movies at the theater because I love to go out instead of staying home. Another reason is because in the theater, you watch movies on a big screen with loud volume unlike at your home,” said Senior Allan Correa
While some prefer to watch movies at the theater because of the experience—the big screen and loud volume—there are certain films, like Me Before You, that really capture your attention and resonate emotionally. The way the plot emphasizes the importance of love and self-care highlights the deeper connections that movies can make with audiences, making the theater experience all the more impactful.
“My favorite romantic movie is Me Before You. The reason being is because something that stood out to me is how the plot emphasizes how love can be very powerful, but you still need to take care of yourself, specially mentally. Watching this movie, it allows you to understand that no matter how strong your love is for someone, nothing can change their state of mind or decisions. At the end of the day, they are who they are and that can’t always be changed. To follow this, I believe that the standout actress when it comes to making romantic movies are those who allow themselves to live the moment in time but being able to escape and think about it and reflect on how the film itself can connect to real life situations allowing the public to connect emotionally, mentally, and maybe even physically,” said Senior Kimberly Arellano.
While Me Before You resonates with its powerful portrayal of love and self-care, another romantic movie that stands out for its relatability and unforgettable characters is 10 Things I Hate About You. The high school vibe and the drama in this film are not only realistic but also capture the essence of youthful relationships, making it another example of how films can deeply connect with audiences.
“My favorite romance movie would be “10 Things I Hate About You” The high school vibe and the drama is very relatable and realistic. Plus, the characters are so iconic, and I love the way they navigate relationships. I also really like the soundtrack,” said Senior Alexus Aguayo.
While 10 Things I Hate About You stands out for its relatable high school vibe and iconic characters, there’s also something special about the performances that bring romance films to life. One such actress is Kate Winslet, whose depth and authenticity elevate her roles, making her one of the most captivating figures in romantic cinema.
“Kate Winslet is a great romantic actress because she brings depth and authenticity to her roles. She fully embodies her characters, making their emotions feel raw and genuine. Her chemistry with Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic, makes her romances feel real and compelling. She is also highly versatile, portraying love stories that range from passionate and joyful to tragic and complex. Kate ability to convey deep emotions makes her one of the most captivating romantic actresses in film,” said Morton alumnus Carlos Rodriguez.
