School and social situations outside of school seem to be stressing students out.
In a survey of 100 Morton East students, only 9% said school has a positive effect on their mental health and stress.
According to Chat GPT, student mental health issues, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, are widespread, affecting a significant portion of the student population. The academic impact brings students stress and mental health challenges that can hinder academic performance, leading to lower grades and decreased productivity. Academic pressure, financial concerns, social isolation, and life transitions can trigger or exacerbate mental health issues among students. Stigma, lack of awareness, and limited access to mental health resources can deter students from seeking help. Students often employ various coping mechanisms, both healthy and unhealthy, to manage stress and mental health challenges during their academic journey.
“There’s not one thing in particular that can affect students’ mental health; in-school and outside-of-school activities could have an impact on their stress and mental well-being,” Morton Social worker Joscelyn Rivera said.
School and other scenarios can affect our mental health.
“The Covid-19 pandemic was a really stressful time for me, especially with an infant and not knowing what to do. Working my way and wondering how to manage things was a lot, but family support really helped me through it,” Morton Social worker Joscelyn Rivera said.
Finding people or ways to comfort ourselves can have an impact.
“I like to reflect on the situation and take some deep breaths, calming myself and do activities that will set my mind at peace,” Morton East Social worker Sheila Salgado said.
How do students deal with it?
“To deal with stress, I like to draw; it helps me feel relieved and it’s very therapeutic. Good friends and family members are always there,” Morton East student Brandon Gomez said.
“Talking to friends and joking around relieve my stress and make me feel better,” Morton East student Iker Vilchez said.
Morton East offers social workers on the second floor across from the guidance office if you need someone to talk to or vent. You can also get a referral from your guidance counselor.

i agree because as a senior many people including teachers agree that there is more at risk as in graduating on time, if you fail a class there is no other chance to fix it

I agree with the lead as school and outside situations could be stressful since you have to keep up with everyone and there will always be a chance of you falling behind.

I fully agree especially when most teacher aren’t really understanding of kids in postion at home general mental health which I think really effects your academic status.

I agree completely with this, especially around thanksgiving break and winter break everything becomes 10x more stressful

I agree fully with this, because I’m a smart kid, but it’s hard to stay up to date with AP Micro Economics since the teacher doesn’t really let us catch up. I even heard that my classmates who are with me are also struggling to keep up with all the different things that are going on. None of the class even passed his tests, because they are just so difficult and the FRQ parts are worse. That class, sincerely, I highly do not recommend taking unless you are really smart and can keep up with all the difficult things that the teacher teaches.

School can be very stressful at times for some students they still keep pushing it thru all the hard work and everything. but school is important to me at least and me I try my best and keep pushing myself to do the work.

I agree that “various coping mechanisms, both healthy and unhealthy,” I know I’ve had some bad coping mechanisms in the past.

School can put a lot of stress in students, and sometimes the stress manifests in physical ways too for example being too tired and sleepy, it’s important for us to maintain a routine where we can prioritise our well being, and find good coping mechanisms to ease our anxiety.

“The academic impact brings students stress and mental health challenges that can hinder academic performance, leading to lower grades and decreased productivity.“ I agree with this comment because sometimes the assignments that teachers have us do can be non enjoyable or just makes me not want to do it/learn at all or it makes me lack productiveness!

It is pretty crazy that “The academic impact brings students stress and mental health challenges”. Like isn’t school encouraged to be fun? For me it’s definitely not

I find it interesting that out of 100 students only 9% said that “school has a positive effect on their mental health and stress”. I knew school was problematic for many but I didn’t think that it would have this kind of unbalanced ratio.
