The Impact of Movies on Mental Health

Movies have a significant influence on our lives, particularly on teenagers who are still in the process of shaping their identities. According to an article in The Times of India titled “The Positive Effects of Movies on Human Behavior,” films often serve as a source of role models for children, helping them distinguish between good and evil and make informed decisions. While this can be beneficial, it’s important to acknowledge that the type of movies consumed can also have potentially detrimental effects on mental health.

Movies can play a pivotal role in shaping people’s mental health. For instance, films that focus on mental health topics, like “Girl, Interrupted,” can provide viewers with a different perspective on such issues. These movies allow individuals to connect with characters facing similar struggles, helping them feel less isolated in their experiences.

Ms. Dee Rodriguez, when asked about the impact of movies on mental health, emphasized “I do believe movies can impact a person’s mental health. They can help you find a connection of someone going through a situation just like yourself and help you feel less alone. They can help you laugh when you need to be cheered up. Movies help us feel connected, seen, and understood.”

However, it’s crucial to recognize that not all movie influences are positive. Watching horror or violent films excessively can lead to anxiety and even glorify violent behavior in extreme cases, potentially encouraging individuals to emulate what they see on screen.

Mr. Lorenzo Hinojosa expressed his perspective, highlighting that movies can alter one’s state of mind. “I think movies can get you out of your own life, I don’t like to think of them as an escapism, rather as a way to see different perspectives.”

Characters in films can inadvertently leave a lasting impact on viewers. For example, the character Tyler Durden from “Fight Club” represents a mental disorder but also embodies a personality that is carefree and unconcerned with societal norms and consequences. Such characters can influence individuals, leading them to admire and possibly adopt certain aspects of these fictional personas.

In summary, movies undeniably have the power to affect mental health. They can provide solace and companionship, offering a sense of connection and understanding for those going through challenging experiences. However, it’s crucial to be mindful of the types of movies consumed, as they can either inspire positive growth or contribute to negative emotions and behaviors. Ultimately, how movies impact mental health largely depends on individual perspectives and the choices made regarding the content consumed.

Frankfother. I agree that movies can affect mental health because horror movies can create a sense of danger when the person viewing it is perfectly safe. According to Sally Winston, a licensed psychologist, “When watching horror films, your heart pumps and the adrenaline flows, and your attention narrows, even as you know you are at home or in the theatre and there is no real danger.” Movies portray fiction or events based on real events, but the way those narratives are portrayed can trick your brain into feeling such emotions even when there is no danger present.

I agree that movies have an influence on our lives, because
depending on the movies, it holds experiences of our own. especially when we connect with a characher that make us feel understood, and seen, and make us feel less by ourselves. when they encourage us emotional release, because I know by experience, the movie ‘ 8 mile’ made me feel allowed to feel good, even if there is a different perspective with issues, but then I relate in some ways, regardless, if it’s not my issues.

O’Malley- Movies can be damaging to peoples mental health. Everything in movies is just for show it may show what someone’s going through but it’s not always positive. For example horror movies and violent movies may influence people to do bad things which can also play with someone’s mental status. Therefore movies can be damaging to peoples mental health.

O’Malley, movies do affect mental heal because when someone watches a movie they try to put themselves in the main characters shoes and sometimes it even makes you feel like you’re the one in the movie. its happened to me a lot where I start to imagine while I’m watching a horror movie or a thriller movie what I would do in that case. sometimes there has bee people who even try to act like a character because they like how the character is.
