Senior Sunrise introduces seniors’ final year

Morton East’s first Senior Sunrise was the dawning of seniors’ final year of activities.

About 60 seniors attended the event held at daybreak on Friday, September 23.  Seniors gathered together on the Morton East field to watch the day’s sunrise at 6:39 a.m.  They brought blankets and coffee to brave the chilly morning temperatures.  Students also brought breakfast and chairs.  The Class of 2023 sponsored the event, under the direction of advisors Ms. Leana Young and Ms. Esmeralda Ortiz.  Pre-registration and permission were required to participate.

“It was pretty cool; it ws pretty dark when we got there.  We had blankets and stuff, and it was pretty cold.  But, it was nice seeing the sun come out.  It was kind of cloudy, so we didn’t get to see much of it, but the sky did get pretty nice.  I thought it was cute,” senior Cynthia Venegas said.

Fortunately, clear skies were not required for those in attendanc to enjoy themselves.

“El principio me dio un poquito miedo; there wasn’t a lot of people at first.  But, like once I started eating and started taking pictures and everything, it got fun.  10 out of 10,” senior Dana Contreras said.

Another senior, Melody Vivas, described the activity in a poetic way.

“The sun was so beautiful; it looked like pools of honey,” senior Melody Vivas said.

While many appreciated the senior company and scenery of the moment, others looked hopefully to the future.

“I think it’s a nice memory.  It had very good symbolism:  having a sunrise, meaning the start or beginning of senior year.  Then, the sunset, meaning the end of us seniors here at Morton East,” Cynthia Venegas said.

Stay tuned for more senior activities.
