Fundraisers give students education

Fundraising at school provides students with better educational opportunities.

According to BoosterThon.com,  school funding is important because “most elementary and secondary schools today do not have enough funds to provide the educational experiences their students need. According to one study, school’s are underfunded by nearly $150 billion annually.”

At Morton East each month, students are provided with new fundraisers.  Most of the school fundraisers are coordinated and implemented by extracurricular clubs and athletics.  These help them fund their club events (like field trips), and allow them to serve the school and community (through club donations to community service organizations).  They also allow the club or sport to afford new and updated equipment.  Districtwide or schoolwide fundraisers also help the school in developing new programs and resources,  and in the building or remodeling of the school.  In a random survey of 100 Morton East students in which they were asked, “Do you like contributing and helping fundraisers?” 72 students said yes, they enjoy going to fundraisers and helping out in any way, while, 28 students said no, they don’t get involved at all.

“I’ve been to some fundraisers but most of the ones I’ve been to they were actually fun and i had a good time.” said senior Francisco Ruiz.

At East not that long ago Ms. Sandoval had an amazing fundraiser for JSA that broke records;  it’s been recorded as the most successful fundraiser that the club has held.

“Mr.Fischer and I are in charge of the fundraisers but I have had a ton of help this year from my club officer and from other people,” said Ms. Sandoval.  “One of the main reason we do fundraisers is to raise money for Washington DC. We go to a conference every single year, and it costs about $4000 to take 25 students,” she said.

If it wasn’t for the help of these charities many students wouldn’t be able to participate or have these opportunities.

“The Lock- in fundraiser is generally the biggest and most successful,” said assistant principal in charge of student activities Ms.Rzadzki.

Also teachers agree that by announcing and recommending more students to go to events it will help so much.

“I think the reason it has been so successful is that the word has gotten around about how great the wreath are, and how great the experience has been for students,” Ms. Sandoval said.

But, fundraisers are not just about the money.

“Fundraising teaches students the value of working for money.  There is a lot of planning, responsibility and work that goes into a fundraiser.  Members of the club have to step up and sell, set-up and work the fundraisers; they put in a lot of extra hours to raise money that isn’t just for them — but for the school and community,”  former class club advisor Mr. Frankfother said.
