Teens get no sleep

Most Morton East teens get no sleep.

According to kidshealth.org, initially, an adolescent body circadian rhythm is reset, so it causes a teen to fall asleep later at night.  The change in circadian rhythm is due to the brain hormone, melatonin that is produced later at night in teens then it is for children and adults causing teens to fall asleep late at night. Originally, teens need 8 to 9 hours of sleep; however, teens currently are only getting about seven and a half hours of sleep. In a random survey of ten Morton East students, eight students say that teens do not get enough sleep.

“I only get up to five hours of sleep because I have so much homework to do,”  senior Jennifer Perez said.

Too much homework is a cause of lack of sleep.

“Teens do not get enough sleep,” senior Victor Villaman said.

Another student feels differently.

“I do get enough sleep if I finish my work early,” senior Jasmine Hernandez said.

However, most teens have other stuff to do throughout the day and cannot do schoolwork until late at night.

“I’m busy throughout the day so I do my homework pretty late and end up sleeping late,” senior Jason Perez said.
