Out-of-school suspension: a teen boy’s 10-day diary

Anonymous

Initially, one might think that 10 days off of school is a vacation.  Not so!

Ten days doesn’t fly by like you would think it would.  Instead, it drags.  You spend a lot of your time worrying whether you are going to be dropped from your classes because you’ll have missed more days.  Then, you start thinking about all the tests and make up work you’ll have waiting for you when you get back — those  big CAs (common assessments) aren’t sent home for you to work on!  And, ultimately, you get bored because all your friends are at school.  Plus, if you’re parents are like mine, they expect you to put in some manual labor for the days of mental labor you are missing.

Day 1:  On this first official day of suspension, I stayed home and did some homework, watched some television, and played some video games.  Then, at night, I went out with some friends — downtown Chicago to see the (Christmas) tree.

Day 2:  I decided to go to work with my dad from 8 in the morning until five the next morning.  He paid me $40.

Day 3:  I went to work with my dad again.  Then, I cam home and went to go see my grandma at my uncle’s house before she left back to Mexico.    Dad gave me another $40.

Day 4:  On this fourth day, I stayed home and decided to clean the house fully before my mom got home from work.  Then, in the afternoon, I decided to do some of my homework that teachers had sent for me to do.

Day 5:  I stayed home and watched movies most of the day.  When my mom got home, we went out for dinner.  Then, I came home and slept.

Day 6:  I decided to to to work with my dad on this sixth day.  (Another $40 btw!)  When we got home, Dad took me out to the mall.

Day 7:  On the seventh day, I stayed home and did A LOT of homework and make up work.

Day 8:  I went to work with my dad.  (Another $40!) Afterwards, I went out to eat with some friends.

Day 9:  Now, on the last day of my suspension, I stayed home and finished up my missing assignments and any other homework that my teachers had given me to make up.

So, consequently, I guess I did make some money — $160 to be exact.  But, I spent a lot of time on school work — that was hard to understand because my teachers weren’t there, and I missed my friends.  I suggest you stay away from OSS.
