Chances may be slim, but it’s still possible for Morton’s Varsity Football team to make it to the postseason with a record of 3 wins and 4 losses so far. LET’S GO!!

According to “49 Interesting Facts About American Football” from The Fact File, Interestingly, the first game of football was played between Rutgers and Princeton colleges on November 6, 1869. Over time, the rules were codified in the 1880s when Walter Camp, a famous rugby player, pioneered the new rules that transformed the game. In the past, Teddy Roosevelt threatened to ban football unless the rules were changed to make playing the game safer. The new rules allowed the forward pass, which has become the heart of the game. Originally, the huddle was introduced back in the 1890s by Paul Hubbard, who was a deaf player that used hand signals to call plays. Bringing the team together surrounding the quarterback was an approach used to prevent competitors from seeing the signals. Traditionally, there is a difference between college and professional football. The balls used in college games have white stripes on each end, which make the ball theoretically easier to see in flight. Currently, there is a difference between college and professional football.  ” As a coach I always look for a contagious attitude, high character, and great enthusiasm. If an athlete has that, he or she will be very tough to beat,” special education teacher and coach John Grayson said.

Even while a player that has a high character and good enthusiasm can help teammates morale go high, a player that knows what they must improve on is critical in the sport of American Football.

“I could work on my speed and agility,” senior middle line-backer Quintin Dillon said.

While good enthusiasm and high character in a player is good for the whole team and players altogether, players who know the specific areas they need to improve on is a total game changer because they will become dominant if they improve a lot on the ability they are lacking. But of this, a player who plays multiple sports and brings their experiences to the field is the key part on making a spectacular player.

“Competing in multiple sports is so important to being a great football player. Two of our varsity coaches also coach other sports that translate to football. Coach O’Donnell is our head track and field coach, and Coach Helton is our head wrestling coach, both sports provide you with the tools to be a great football player,” Coach John Grayson said.

As said, playing multiple sports can be a big benefit to players of all sports, but football is a sport where big hits are made, and technique is a good thing to have on the field. If a player is recklessly aggressive then it will doubtlessly damage their performance, but if used in a controlled manner this same aggression can help them play more competently.

“Aggression is something I need to improve on,” Sophomore Tight End Tyler Nichols said.
