The Morton Pony Express News group went around asking Morton staff and students for their opinions on smoking marijuana. There were many mixed opinions on this topic.
We started by interviewing a dean from Morton East High School. They were asked the following: “What are the consequences a student would face if caught with marijuana?” They stated, “When students are first caught, they are searched, meaning all of their personal items are given to security. Secondly, they are sent to the nurse’s office, where they will complete a five-step test that determines if they’re high.”
Next, we asked for opinions on underage kids smoking at school. They said the following: “It is wrong and unhealthy, in my opinion, and kids should stop doing it instead of making it a habit.”
However, a Morton security guard had another opinion on students smoking marijuana. When interviewed, they stated, “(People) need to realize that there is a time and a place, and school is not the place nor time.”
When asked about their opinion of students so young smoking, they stated, “Hypothetically speaking, if my daughter were to start smoking or ever consider smoking, I would rather have them smoke it with me knowing and with me in the same place because I know they are safe. What students do outside of school is not under our control. If you’re smoking outside in an alley or someplace, we cannot do anything about it. That’s all on law enforcement.”
We asked more opinions on the topic, and they all led to the same conclusion: either they dislike it and would rather kids not do it, or they are okay with it as long as the kids are being responsible.
As many websites and videos on the internet state, marijuana has some health benefits, but regardless of these benefits, many people still find it very harmful. And, just like alcohol, it is illegal to partake recreationally until after the age of 21. And, it is always illegal on school premises.
All in all, regardless of your opinions, everyone should be responsible for their own choices and follow through with any consequences that might come with them.
