Do you use animal tested products? I hope not

The majority of people are informed if their products are cruelty-free.

According to The Human Society of the United States, animal testing is not legally required for it to be sold and also is not required to test to prove the cosmetics are safe to use. Nationally, it is estimated that 100,000-200,000 animals are tortured such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, and mice. dogs and monkeys are used to test other types of chemicals, Galgos Amigo’s animal welfare page states. In the past 94% of the drugs that pass animal trials failed the human trials. For example, a drug called Vioxx killed 60,000 people when it proved that it was effective with the lab animals Jenn Ryan stated. Currently, The Human Society says that 0 mice, rats, and mice are not protected under the Animal Welfare Act. In a poll conducted through Instagram and school teams, 50 people responded that 28% use animal tested products and 72% don’t use animal tested products.

“This is a very important issue to me so I always try to purchase products that are not tested on animals, cruelty free and contain NO animal byproducts. There are two ways I go about this- I look for the symbol on the product (typically a bunny) or something labeled on the product that says “cruelty free”.  I also have an app downloaded on my phone called “Bunny Free” that was created by PETA. I can search any company to see if they test on animals or use animal byproducts in their product so I know to steer clear of that company,” science teacher Ms.Berezniak said.

Traditionally people will check their products and see if their cruelty-free.

“No pero si busco en el internet, puedo averiguar si lo estan haciendo,” mother Elia Silva said.

Unfortunately, people continue to use animal-tested products because they’re not informed.

“I’m not sure which ones, but I’m pretty sure I am,” college student Jessica Homan said.

Customarily, not many people know what products in their home are cruelty-free.

“I don’t think I use any,” senior Danna Bibiano said.

Overtime the hope is that people become more aware of the products that they use.

“With the technology and knowledge we have available today, we do not need to use animals as test subjects. It is inhumane and unethical,” science teacher Ms. Maria Berezniak said.

Cosmetic companies still continue to test products on animals. Maybe you have some at home right now.

“Actually I don’t know, but my uncle claims (cosmetics are) made from animals,” sophomore Kalani Marino said.

Beforehand, research which products are cruelty-free and make a change.

“I try to be an informed consumer when it comes to purchasing products that are tested on animals as best as I can. I use vegan and cruelty free cosmetics, shampoo/conditioner, lotions and body wash.  I support companies that do not test on animals and one of the best ways to show my support and speak up for animals is by using the power of the dollar,” science teacher Ms. Maria Berezniak said.
