Most Googled pandemic questions by Morton students
February 2, 2021
What are the Covid-19 symptoms? was the most googled question of last year for Morton East students.
In a random survey of 37 Morton East students/ Cicero residents, what is something you googled the most in 2020? An interesting thing posted from google themselves is that the top searched topics were corona virus, election, results, and Kobe Bryant. Surprisingly on Semrush blog corona virus wasn’t the most googled question in 2020, it was how to vote in India? Another interest fact from Semrush Blog the most googled question in the USA was what to watch? In a random survey of 37 of Morton east/Cicero residents, it was reported that What are the Covid-19 Symptoms? Was the most googled question they googled.
“My Google search bar in 2020 was filled with recipes and home workouts. I was so bored being home all day so I loved trying new and exciting recipes for me and family. I enjoyed cooking new recipes and I didn’t mind how long they took because I didn’t have anything else to do anyway! Along with the recipes, I tried to stay fit while being home all the time. I don’t have much of a home-gym so it was mostly just me looking up different workouts that could be done at home or outside with little equipment!
With that being said, I think the most Googled questions of 2020 would have to centered around Covid-19 of course! I remember Googling questions about symptoms, reinfection, and stats all the time to stay updated and educated! I think there was a lot of fear among Americans in 2020 so it was comforting to have so much information at your fingertips. My Google searches were definitely influenced by being stuck at home due to Covid. I think having more time caused me to start Googling random things.” Civics teacher MS. Couch said.
Customarily us today we google everything that’s going wrong and get our answer through the internet quickly.
“I think I used Google a lot more because of Covid, whether it was to find out the symptoms, or to get a restaurant phone number to order delivery, I did do a lot of searching in 2020. I wanted to make sure that I was being safe and following rules and protocol of the places I went and Google helped me figure out a lot of the information I needed in order to go get food or safely go to my dentist. I think the symptoms search was my most searched as I was working and living with other people and I wanted to make sure none of us would get sick.” English teacher Ms.Lowther said.
Overtime google is going to be one of our biggest resources for life’s big problems.
“What can help you get your taste back? And yes I googled more often in 2020” Senior Danna Bibiano said.

Belmares, I liked this article a lot because you can tell easily that we were all quite worried and bored, and I have to agree because I think I searched up all of those questions during this worrying time. Also new things as well to do like baking I liked doing but it was rare and during the pandemic I got more into it and I am a lot better at it too, also learning how to cook recipes definitely help a lot, also shopping and what were the protocols and how to be most safe.

Teacher:Belmares, This survey really shows how useful google can be and how much people were bored and but also careful of their physical and mental health many people are gonna come out of this pandemic mentally stronger for sure and physically too but as long as you come out without being sick its what matters the most in my opinion.

This article was interesting because it shows the experiences of some people during the pandemic. They would search up things that would keep them distracted and busy during these tough times. Also it shows how aware the students were and the precautions they were taking whenever they would search up any covid questions, like the symptoms.

[BELMARES] Once I heard that the corona virus hit IL, my mom freaked and bought some hand sanitizers for the house. I googled the symptoms to check if my family was good. They were, but then I saw how bad it was for Mexico and googled how corona virus patients have died and it was more than 200,000. I thought this wouldn’t happen to my family, no way. Then I got a call from my dad saying my grandpa passed away from it.

(Belmares) I mostly used google to look up easy to make food and games so that I could play with my siblings. From time to time I would look at all the covid stories available to try and understand what was happening in the world around us.

During the pandemic on my search history I also had a lot of recipes and home workouts, but along with that I had a bunch of series on TV I was binge watching along with YouTube videos.

(Ms. Belmares) Google is a very valuable resource because it has many information in every single topic but not everything in the internet is true and many misinformation is present. In uncertain times google can be a very valuable resource.

(Ms. Belmares) Google was indeed a very valuable resource especially in such an uncertain time like that of today because we lived through something that is once in century, but it is always good to remember that not everything in the internet can be trusted.

Belmares : I agree with the idea that most of the searches done for 2020 come from wanting to know about Covid-19 and whether or not a person has it. I think that other non-symptom related searched probably stem from people’s boredom or extra time due to quarantine and down time. It’s impressive how much the virus has impacted us.

Belmares- Overall, I want to say that I think this article is very good because it does bring to light many things students and teachers are worried about. As a student, I tried not to research about the symptoms and etc. because it was already so talked about on tv it started to become overwhelming. So personally, I tried to look up fun things to do and many websites to online shop at 🙂

I think 2020 was definitely a year were google had a lot of questions about COVID-19, although I did google about it a few times I tried to be informed but being able to forget I was informed because it was affecting me so much, my mental health and my mind was just scared and panicked all the time because of everything I would see on the news. If you asked about any new updates I was able to tell you all about it but if no one asked I would forget to help me and my situation:)

I mainly looked up recommendations for shows and games over quarantine! especially over the summer and through winter break when I had more free time. I know me and a lot of my family members looked up Covid symptoms too!

BELMARES- I definitely googled what were the symptoms of covid to take precautions. I also think most of my google searches were online shopping websites and places to eat !
Javier Torres - BELMARES • Feb 9, 2021 at 9:11 am
BELMARES- I can totally agree with theses statements, having constant information on what was going on around me really did affect my stance on the situation. Being able to be more calm and collected because I would know about any major changes or events taking place. I don’t think I truly realized how google has become a major information source until now, we just seem to unconsciously google any problems we have because it has become such a normalized habit. This was a great article keep up the great work!

I liked this article because it gives good information on others people’s experiences during the pandemic. What’s caught my attention while reading this was how even students research Covid-19 symptoms, cases, or anything related to it, because I felt that students never really payed attention to it, and that was more of what parents did.
Jasmin Padron BELMARES • Feb 9, 2021 at 7:42 am
BELMARES I also agree that google is and well be the biggest resource for, answers for questions.

This was really interesting to me because it wasn’t what I had expected the article to be about but it makes a lot of sense to me about why people were this looking up all this stuff while I had i expected something more comedic but this shows how important it is to people to have google especially in a time during quarantine to help with out health and wellbeing and make sure we don’t get bored by finding things to do.
