Support For Single Parents

What’s working to support a single parent with childcare in Chicago during COVID-19?

Governor Pritzker amended the Executive Order to allow certain license-exempt childcare centers to provide care for the children of essential workers without needing to apply for an Emergency Child Care License during the COVID-19 State of Emergency. It’s recommended that centers serve no more than 50 children per center with a maximum group size of 10 per classroom. Some of the parents are scared that they could get sick and not take care of their kids. Some parent could lose their job because they don’t have anyone to take care of their children. Quarantine is tough on all Americans, but especially for solo moms, who often live month to month with having no work

“I would leave my children with my family or a close friend so they’re not alone,” parent Alma said

Another parent thinks differently.

“No, I would not leave my children in daycare because they would be able to get sick,” parent Arturo said
