Rock music was the most popular of last year with Morton East students.

In a random survey of 46 Morton East students, 15 students said they chose rock as their favorite. According to a google search,  rock music is a broad genre of popular music that originated as ‘’rock and roll’’ in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s , developing into a range of different styles in the mid- 1960s and later, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom .  Chuck Berry was the one who invented rock music — Elvis Presley wouldn’t have been Elvis without Chuck Berry.

‘’I love rock. When I go to a rock concert like the Foo fighters I feel like a real animal,” journalism teacher Mr. Kent Frankfother said.

In second place, 13 students said pop was their favorite type of music. Pop is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form during the mid – 1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. Popular music and the pop music are often used interchangeably.

“Pop is one of my favorite genres; it goes with every party.  It’s just fun to listen to,’’ one surveyed respondent said.

Eleven students said rap was their favorite — making rap the 3rd most popular genre at East.   Hip-Hop and rap music was developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans and Latino Americans in the Bronx borough of New York city in the 1970’s.  To some, Eminem is the king of rap; he won the crown on album sales (7.5) million.

“I was into the old school gangsta rappers like Ice-T and NWA, as well as DeLaSoul, but I think rap really became legit with English teachers with Kendrick Lamar.  I mean, he won a Pulitzer Prize for “DAMN”,” journalism teacher Mr. Kent Frankfother said.

EDM (electronic) and Trap (a “subgenre” of hip-hop”) each had two students choosing them as favorites.

“It’s not the best, but it’s not the worst.  It’s decent (if you’re clubbing with friends),” one respondent said of EDM.

Another agrees.

“Trap isn’t my favorite because I like music with words,” another respondent said.

One person preferred country.  Country music is rooted in blues and folk music.

“I love country because it’s calm and sad — my favorite kind of music,” a respondent said.
