Recently, three Morton East sculpture students were given cardboard and a day to create an original sculpture for Coachella. The IHSAE Art Throwdown is an art event that includes a 3D Cardboard Sculpture Challenge. The challenge is a team event where students create a sculpture using cardboard. Gabriela Mozo, Areli Salmeron, and Lilliana Vazquez spent January 30 creating their sculpture as part of the Art Throwdown.

So, how did they come up with an idea?
“We had done research on Coachella and saw a bunch of animals. We wanted to do something similar to fit the theme but put our own twist on it. So, we chose mythical animals from Greek mythology,” said Areli Salmeron.
Then, one idea built on another.
“For me, I just like mythical animals, so I kind of just went with their idea, building more detailed creatures,” said Lilliana Vazquez.
But the competition had its challenges.
“Well, it’s easier if you have better time management,” said Areli Salmeron. Lilliana agrees. “Make sure to have everything planned out before starting,” said Lilliana Vazquez.
Though the Morton East sculpture did not win, the students learned from the process and ended up with a cool sculpture for the school.
