Most East couples will get both roses AND chocolates this year.

According to Proflowers.com “The U.S buys more than 1 billion roses each year”. They buy the roses to be sold in the first week of February because of Valentine’s Day. According to eater.com “1.7 Billion will be spent on candy alone”. This refers to the number of heart chocolates people will spend on Valentine’s Day. The website also mentioned how Roses and Chocolates are the most sold during this season of love, yet what is more preferable for couples to buy. It’s the time of showing love and gratitude but do girls or couples rather have both gifted, Chocolates and Roses? In a random survey of 100 Morton East students, 76 students reported that they will gift their valentine both Chocolates and Roses as their show of love.

“Today’s generation people just celebrate it to show off. There is no actual love showcasing behind it. It was meant to be the day of lovers to express and open up to their loved ones!,” junior Jose Torres said.

People should express themselves about their love. Fifty-three percent of single people are women and 47% are men. If you don’t want to express fake love to someone just be your own Valentine. Who says you can’t be your Valentine? In 2015, 18% of women sent themselves flowers.

“Well according to me it’s a really special day for couples to express their feelings. Love needs a day for recognition. Love is something that should be valued, although love is something that should be valued every day. We need to give love a day to be celebrated. Valentines Day is a time to honor, love, respect, and care for our loved ones. If there is no Valentine’s day how will people know they are loved by someone special,” senior Viviana Ocon said.

It’s estimated that the U.S. alone is going to spend $3.3 billion on flowers for loved ones this year. And the most likely flower to be purchased is red roses of course. Valentine’s day is for people who do and don’t have someone to love but you always have your family. Even if someone else rejects you, there is always someone else.

“My girlfriend loves both roses and chocolates so of course, I will spoil her with both”, junior Erick Dominguez said.

Roses stand for strong romantic flowers they are flowers of love. The chocolate box has been around for more than 140 years. And there’s a standout favorite in every box. According to the National Confectioners Association, caramels are the most popular flavor in chocolate boxes.

“I think Valentine’s Day has become a crassly excuse for phony romanticism. Couples treat each other like shit for the other 364 days of the year and expect a miracle of love on one particular day. People should just work harder at being nice to one another always, not just for one day a year,” sophomore Esteban Gonzalez said.

You don’t need a particular day to express your feelings to someone. Many people want to experience a relationship in its stead of conducting or trying to remain in one. People fake to prove they’re in for the long haul. In reality, they’re just exploring.

“Roses and chocolates can never be missed on Valentine’s Day! I hope I receive these gifts from my crush I’m excited about this date,” sophomore Alondra Reynaga said.
