Morton East Juniors Win the 2019 Powderpuff Game

Aaliyah Favela

Morton East’s junior girls took the Powderpuff championship title this year — and East’s sophomores beat East’s seniors in the prelims.

On September 30, the sun had risen and it had embarked on a new day but not just any day. It was the annual Girls powderpuff football game. There were 8 teams in competition with each other to see which grade was the best and how much school spirit they had. All the teams had woken up eager for that game yet one team woke up not knowing they’d also be this year’s powderpuff champions.

At the start of the game, it was West Freshman vs. West Juniors on the right, while East Freshman Center vs. East Juniors on the left. West freshman and East Freshman put in a great effort in the game but they were unsuccessful winning the game against the juniors from both East and West.

In the second game, it was West sophomores versus West seniors and East seniors’ vs East sophomores. West sophomores put up a great fight against West seniors but they couldn’t get the job done, unfortunately, leaving East juniors to play another game.

Fast forward to the end of the night, we are down to two teams left. West seniors versus East Juniors. East hadn’t beaten West in over a ten years. The final game begins to start and each team put up a tremendous fight but only one can be victorious. After going through a long tough battle with West seniors, East Juniors managed to beat West Seniors with a score of 14-6. East had finally beaten West, after years and the competitors on that team won this year’s powderpuff championship game bringing the trophy home to East.

All the credit for the win goes straight to East Juniors who put in so much hard work and dedication. The Junior team had about Forty players who practiced 3-5 days a week for 5 weeks. They love playing so much that they wish the school had an official team at the school. Behind every great team, there are great leaders and this year’s Junior captains were Leslie Cerero and Marisol Nunez. They helped their team put in work at every practice and push them through whatever came their way. One of the coaches for the (east) junior powderpuff had a comment to make on the game, “I give credit all to the Juniors for putting hard work [in] and staying dedicated. I can’t wait to see what they bring in as seniors”, (Tracy Lloyd).

Good Job to all the participants that played and a big congratulations and shout out to the East Junior Girls on becoming the 2019 Powderpuff Champions. East has finally beat West and it was all due to their hard work that the Juniors put into this game. Congratulations East Junior Girls team, Keep up the great work!
