Most students are not comfortable telling teachers about their personal lives

Majority of students at Morton East High School do not feel comfortable telling their teachers about their personal lives.

In a random survey of 120 Morton East students, 96 students say they do not feel comfortable telling their teachers about their personal life. There were 24 students who say they confide in their teachers.  Teachers are important in a student’s life; they have contact with each other for 6 hours a day, 5 days of the week.  With that being said, students get comfortable and are willing to form a bond with some of their teachers. We asked several students if they feel comfortable telling their teachers about their personal lives and if not, why not? There are some students who would rather let their friends know what they are going through since they are the same age and they can relate more.

“No, because I don’t really trust teachers, I would rather tell my friends about it. I feel like some teachers are not trustworthy,” senior Daniel Angulo said.

There are students who feel way more comfortable telling their friends their business, but there are others who believe the teachers wouldn’t be any help.

“I don’t feel comfortable telling them my business because I don’t think they would be any help,” senior Anthony Avitia said.

Although there are students who don’t feel comfortable, there are others who do. They would trust a teacher they feel closer to.

“It depends who the teacher is like if they tell us about their personal life, I can tell them about mine. If they put trust in us, I would be able to put trust in them,” junior Diana Rodriguez said.

Even though there are students who would let teachers know about their personal life, there are still others who think it isn’t right for teachers to know them like that.

“No, because it’s just too weird; they shouldn’t be involved in my life,” sophomore Nastassia Juarez said.

Most students think about teachers as just ‘teachers’ they expect only a student-teacher relationship.

“Kind of, because maybe some things are just too personal to share with others,” sophomore Jorge Hernandez said.

However, there are teachers who try to have their students trust them. They are open about their own lives to make the students feel comfortable.

“I think my students trust me because they come to me and tell me things about things that are going on at home. During my lunch, students come to my room and they talk to me about their lives. The way I make them feel comfortable about telling me about their life is to talk about mine. The only way I can help is by giving advice, I am not qualified to do anything more. If the situation is really bad, I will refer them to the school social worker,” English teacher Mr. Jeremy Robinson said.
