Should kids still go trick-or-treating during the pandemic? Students say no

Should trick-or-treating still happen this 2020 even though we are in a pandemic?  Most kids say no.

In the US we have had 8.38 million cases of Covid-19 alone. Since March there have been social distancing rules and face mask regulations. Halloween is very much NOT the most social distancing day, so are Cicero residents thinking about trick or treating this year?  The Town of Cicero hasn’t put out much information aside from the time trick or treaters can be out:  between 3 pm to 7 pm.  Whichever way Halloween 2020 goes, it seems to show we will have a very fun yet safe Halloween in the community — with everyone agreeing on wearing masks around the area.  The pandemic has surely taken a toll of the town of Cicero, but there is a way it’ll work for anyone, young or old. In a random survey of 11 Morton East students, 63% said kids shouldn’t go trick or treating while 36% said they should.

I think that kids should still be able to go trick-or-treating since it is an outdoor activity and one that can also practice safe social distancing. Families are expected to stay at least 6 feet away and wear a mask in addition to their costume. For those of us passing out treats, we should wear masks, wash hands, and keep a safe distance such as laying out candy on a table for kids to pick up as they come by.  So much has already been taken from young kids this year, I believe that Halloween is one childhood event that we can practice safely. I follow my neighborhood on social media and community members are all agreeing to be safe. This makes me feel confident that my kids can have a fun, safe, and memorable Halloween this year,” English teacher Candice Daly said.

A couple seniors get their thoughts in.

“I honestly don’t think there should be trick-o-treating in Cicero, but if there is all the candy should be placed in a bowl 6 feet away from the door,” senior Elijah Bermudez said.

Others had different ways to practice this Halloween activity, such as these other two Morton East seniors,.

“I think trick or treating should still go on; I mean we all wear masks and just throw in candy to a bag — no biggie,” senior Rafael Noa said.

But, of course, many like Julie Duran agree.

“I think it’s fine since everyone has masks already,” senior Julie Duran said
