Why do people like horror movies?

Most Morton East students enjoy horror movies.

According to the PsychCentral, some people love watching scary movies because they enjoy the adrenaline rush. They like to feel strong emotions such as anger, hatred, fear, surprise, and empathy for a character. it makes us get a kick and shows us what we’re afraid of.  in a random survey that Morton East high school students took22 students said they like horror movies out of 27.   Some people, however, like their horror movies to be full of gore and blood, and disturbing.

Of course, everyone has their favorite. I asked Morton staff Nathaniel Moore a couple of questions regarding what the grossest scary movies are to watch over Halloween.

I love horror movies! I prefer spooky movies, rather than gory (bloody or gross) movies. Bloody and gory movies can be a turn off for me. I would rather watch something scary, usually ghost-related, rather than watch people get chopped up or tortured. I love the atmosphere that horror movies can provide. The feeling that you are surrounded, or that there is something behind you is a pretty great way to make people feel something for your characters and settings,” math teacher Nathaniel Moore said.

Sometimes horror movies become so creepy that they are unbearable to watch.

“It depends on what kind of disturbing you are talking about. For me, “Hereditary”, is a very disturbing movie, and very scary. Another would be “The Decent” which makes you feel so claustrophobic! The goriest or grossest movies I typically stay away from. From what I have heard though, the toughest ones to watch are the likes of Hostel, Saw, Human Centipede 2, or Cannibal Holocaust. I would not recommend watching these movies, because they’re not entertaining for me, they’re just gross, math teacher Nathaniel Moore said.

Of course, everyone has their favorite horror movie.

My favorite horror movies are, The Conjuring, 28 Days Later, Alien, it follows, and The Shining, math teacher Nathaniel Moore said.

“I do like horror movies because some are scary to watch with friends and also have mystery behind them.  I also like them because I get to face my fears.  It keeps me from not being bored at home during these hard times,” senior Michael Moreno said.

While some “face their fears,” others just like being scared.

“I do like horror movies because I like the feeling of suspense and adrenaline when watching it. It’s crazy when some movies say that they are based on true events. It makes us think that these things could happen to us.  It puts us in the characters’ shoes and makes us think about what we would do in that situation,” senior Elexus Chavez said.

Other’s like to get into the mind of the murderer.

“I do enjoy horror movies because I get to see the lives of average people going through terrifying things.  We also get to see the killer’s perspective or the motive on why he is doing the stuff he does,” senior Andrik Nava said.

The best movies to watch during the month of October should be the Original Friday the 13th, Halloween, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. These are the movies that made people love the horror Genre and made horror History. There are Movies for everyone. With just Jump scares or with gore. There are movies for everyone’s taste in movies. But my favorite movies are The Saw franchise, IT, A Quiet Place, The Platform.
