How many undocumented students do we have at Morton East?

An exact number is impossible to come by.

When asked, Principal Jose Gamboa said that the percentage of undocumented students 10 years ago was about 30 percent.  “We do have a lot (of undocumented students),” Mr. Gamboa said.

According to Ms. Avila from the College and Career Center, around 24 students attended the Rise Act meeting. The Rise Act is a new law that will allow some students who were previously ineligible for the state of Illinois financial aid to receive aid.

According to IACAC.org, an estimated 13,000 undocumented students in Illinois will graduate from high school in 2015.

Lastly, according to Mr.Parrie under federal guidance, K-12 public schools cannot ask about a child’s immagration status and, and  even if they do know, staff must treat them no differently than U.S citizen students.  Also, while schools must protect the rights  and privacy of students, officials  also must cooperate with federal officials in some instances.
