How many days off do teachers get from maternity leave?
February 10, 2020
Morton must allow for 12 weeks off for the birth or adoption of a child.
This has nothing to do with paid time off. It only guarantees that the employee’s job will be saved for 12 weeks. Morton must allow for 12 weeks off for the birth or adoption of a child. It only guarantees that the employee’s job will be saved for 12 weeks.
According to the Illinois Education Association, the school code allows teachers to take up to 30 days of accumulated sick leave after a birth without proving any medical need or being subject to any time limitations. In Morton’s FMLA policy, when they take their maternity leave teachers can use their own sick days to be paid for up to 6 weeks of their leave. If they do not have enough sick days, this would not apply.

Genge –
I think that the amount of time of maternity leave is very important for new mother to get better and to take care of their newborn. In Canada, a pregnant employee or a new mother can take up to 15 weeks of paid maternity leave. This is more than the time given in the US. I think every mother should be given 15 weeks of maternity leave and that it is up to the mother if they want to rest for the 15 weeks I go back to work sooner.

Genge- 2 weeks is plenty of time for a staff to be on maternity leave. Most jobs allow up to 30 days and women return perfectly fine. it might be hard at times because their child had just been born but eventually they will have to return back to work. 3 months is good enough because during those three month the mothers had already been bonding with the baby alone. If the child is sick after birth and needs to be treated or anything, those 3 months are a good amount of time for all that before the mother returns to her job.

Ms. Genge- I strongly believe that teachers should be allowed a longer maternity leave. Babies are incredibly demanding, taking care of one requires a lot of time and patience. Babies need to be around their mother and I think it’s wrong that a teacher has to use up her sick days to nurture her child.

Genge:
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires employers to offer employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year for parental and medical-related leave and that is what Morton does they do the 12 weeks required by the FMLA.

Genge- I feel like 12 weeks isn’t enough time. They just had a newborn child, and they should be able to spend as much time as possible with it. They should be given more time with the baby just to make sure everything is okay and make sure they’re fine, and not having to worry about working.

Genge- Having a baby is a huge achievement in life. And having 12 weeks isn’t enought. Because the first few weeks the baby would stay with the mom. And before coming back to work, teachers have to find a caretaker. If they dont, then it wont be possible to return. Also the baby would be really attached with its mother at this point, so seperating the child is going to be a task.

Genge – I say teachers should get a little more time when they take a maternity leave or they should be paid for more then just 6 of the 12 weeks. Give them more time because it’s not easy being pregnant. There’s pain physically and mentally that they have to go through especially if it’s they’re first time. Also they’re not given enough time to spend it with their newborn. Babies require a lot of attention and it’s especially hard for single mother teachers. They’re are about 15 million single mothers in America. Can you imagine the stress it is to raise a baby, leave to work, teach other parents kids for 6 hours Monday through Friday, and not get paid enough. Not only that, but you have to look for a babysitter to watch your newborn child. Also you repeated your claim three times.

Genge – I believe that teachers should not have to use sick days for maternity leave. I have done some research and I found that teachers receive 12 days of sick leave a year. This is a good amount, but these days should not be taken for maternity leave. Children are expensive and teachers should be paid during their leave.

Ms. Genge – Teachers should get paid 3/4 of their maternity leave because while doing research I found that a lot of teachers go back to school not being ready. Meaning they have to go back to teaching because they need the money to support the newborn baby. As well as people have to stop and think that teachers teach and take care of other people’s kids but they can’t take care of their own because they need money.

Genge- Ive talked to my spanish teacher about this topic and she explained to me that every year teachers get a certain amount of sick days, and if they arent all used up by the end of the year, they get moved on to the next school year. Which means if a teacher needs more days after maternity leave and has used up all her sick days, she wont get payed for those days she takes off.

Genge – In the United States, there is no required maternity leave set by the federal government, this is a problem as many if not all other developed nations have a required amount of paid/unpaid maternity- and even paternity leave. One problem with the writing of this article is that the second paragraph is pretty redundant as it says the essentially same sentence 3 times. Does Morton provide any form of paternity leave for male teachers, or is the 12 weeks exclusively for female teachers?

Genge – After doing a little research, I found out that on average, school teachers get about 12 days of sick and personal leave per year. If and once they’re on maternity leave, each sick day they took before that is one less paid day during maternity leave.

Ms. Genge – I think the teachers should get payed for their leave because they are bringing a new life into their household and they have to maintain it somehow. If the school doesn’t pay them, then it’s less income for that new life.

Genge- How does getting a sub work when a teacher goes on a maternity leave?
Itzel Barraza • Feb 14, 2020 at 7:18 am
Genge – There has been a recent argument regarding the maternity leave of mothers in schools. Beginning in the fall of 2018, it was decided that public schoolteachers in New York City would get their parental leave paid. However, this would only pay 6 out of the 12 weeks of maternity leave. This not only applies to mothers, but to the fathers of a newborn child as well. Parents who adopt would also get maternity leave and their 6 weeks paid.

I think this is very little time since there is a new baby in the household and the main focus should be on the baby. I also think that the maternity should be payed, regardless if they have enough sick days. I know that in Italy, teachers have to take 2 months before the due date and 3 months after the due date.
