A significant number of Morton East students have attended school events.
But the majority of Morton East students still do not go to any school events or clubs.
In Morton East, 28 students of 75 (or 37%) who were surveyed went to student activities or participated in club activities.
According to Google’s AI overview, around 80% to 87% of high schoolers have engaged in events or clubs, with more girls than boys engaging in clubs or events. Juniors are among the group who have the most interest in joining clubs or going to an event compared to any other grade, but despite that, only 51% of high schoolers are engaged in clubs, with the other percent engaged in school activities. On the other hand, in a recent Morton East High survey, only 37% of students in the school are engaged in student activities, which is less than the national average.
“One of the many reasons for this is that students don’t have enough time to join clubs or sports because they have jobs or didn’t feel like going to the events due to the timing of these activities,” said Morton student Joel Correra.
School staff should make the timings of their events in a way that everyone would be able to go, like on weekends instead of the usual times when students have to go to work or are busy with schoolwork.
Some students haven’t found clubs or sports that fit their interests.
“School activities don’t catch my interest,” said senior Peter Gomez.
Could this be why some Morton students don’t go to clubs or after-school activities? Because school staff don’t put the effort into catching students’ interest.
“Sometimes the clubs or after-school activities are far from students’ homes, and that is one of the reasons why some of us can’t attend these activities, because some of us can’t drive or they are too far to walk,” says Morton senior Jeremiah Calleros.
