A significant number of students are finding their classes to be harder than expected.
According to Google AI overview, instructor behavior greatly impacts student satisfaction with the class. This means that a student can be highly motivated and passionate about a class, but if they don’t like their teacher/instructor, they will not like the class. Another interesting fact given by Google AI overview is that students facing challenges in their personal life will be more likely to drop classes due to high stress levels. Additionally, for many students, peers can be a great influence on class opinions due to recommendations and the possibility of having people they dislike in their class or not having friends in their classes. In a random survey of 101 Morton East students, 65 students said they didn’t find their classes to be harder than expected.
“I have had a student express to me their anxiety about communicating with people that they don’t know. However, I reassured them that the class would help them work on that skill, but if they weren’t willing to get out of their comfort zone, they should drop the class,” said teacher Kent Frankfother.
One student thinks that students will drop classes due to lack of productivity in the summer.
“I think that incoming students weren’t working on summer work to prepare themselves for the upcoming school year, so there was a surge in students dropping classes in the first week of school,” said senior Cristian Moreno-Rivera.
However, other students struggle due to the language barrier.
“Chemistry is my least favorite class because English is not my first language, so it’s hard,” said sophomore Alejandra Vargas.
Another setback for students is that everyone learns their work differently.
“My teacher doesn’t explain the work in a way that I understand,” said Samuel Meza, senior at Morton East.
Other students struggle due to different reasons like a heavy workload.
“AP English Literature is a lot of essays and reading, and college essays are hard even though I enjoy writing,” said Jesus Lopez, senior at Morton East.
Another student agrees with Jesus, saying,
“My least favorite class is AP Seminar because I don’t like English and the assignments are too hard,” said sophomore Daniel Franco.
