Students at Morton East apparently don’t use AI for their assignments.
In a random class survey, 9 out of 24 Morton East students said they have used AI for schoolwork. This shows that less than half of students use AI to help with schoolwork.
Here’s what people had to say about the topic:
“I use AI to help with problems or assignments I have trouble with. I specifically ask AI to explain a problem to me in simpler words. My teachers encourage us to do these assignments without AI, as it can be seen as cheating in a way,” said sophomore Kalani Lucero.
“I think that AI can be used as another resource, as it takes from other sources already available. I pay attention to the resources that are already in the classroom instead of relying on third-party sources. It can be used to easily create responses to assignments using sources from existing student responses,” said junior Edwin Rodriguez.
“I make sure to fact-check the answer AI has provided me with because I know that AI isn’t 100% reliable. My teachers in the past have allowed us to use AI with limits. We are not to directly copy what AI has provided us with, but rather take inspiration from it. I found this very helpful because I struggled to answer certain questions in some assignments, and AI is very good at dumbing down topics. I would recommend AI to my peers because it’s a great way to understand things, such as explaining complex topics that even Google cannot provide an answer to,” said senior Leslie Sandoval.
“AI can be useful in many ways, such as giving students different pointers with assignments or inspiring them. It can enhance their creativity; for example, in photography, it can add something the student might not have access to. I encourage students to use it if they want to add something to their work that they can’t add themselves due to a lack of resources,” said staff member Alonso Balderas.
“I’m aware things like that exist, but I am unfamiliar with it and how it works. I think students should always try an assignment themselves first, and if they need help, then using AI is a good option to get tips from. AI is helpful to an extent, but I feel students might rely on AI too often if they use it too much,” said parent Elizabeth Gonzalez.
