Here at Morton East High School, the rugby season has started, tryouts are over, and there is excitement to see the first game of the season.
Many Morton East students are also excited to play rugby. A fun fact about rugby is that The Rugby World Cup Trophy is named after William Webb Ellis, who is mostly known for inventing rugby and was one of the best rugby players. Another fun fact is that rugby originated at Rugby School in England in the 1800s and has been popular ever since. Lastly, the first rugby balls were made from pig bladders covered with leather (Ewwww). Girls rugby coach Mr. Luis Castenon (Coach Cast) is excited to start another season with a great team.
Why did you decide to coach this sport?
“I played rugby both in high school and in college. I also played it with friends and still watch rugby to this day. It’s a sport that truly helped me stay active, but I also enjoyed the physicality of it. It’s something different, and I was very knowledgeable about the sport. The opportunity came up when there was a vacant spot with girls’ rugby, and I took the opportunity,” said Coach Cast.
What inspired you?
“Inspiration came from being able to coach students in the high school that I attended and where I played rugby. I fell in love with the sport, and if that happened to me, I would like to help kids find a sport that they could love as well,” said Coach Cast.
Why do you enjoy rugby?
“I enjoy rugby because, to me, it’s the most fun sport that I have played. The girls are welcoming and supportive, and overall, it’s a very respectful sport because a lot of people get to learn that once they start playing the sport or get to know the sport,” said Senior Isabel Arana.
What is your favorite memory?
“My favorite memory from rugby is after games when we get to bond with the team and the opposing team. We share a meal while learning new things about each other and sometimes doing challenges against each other,” said Senior Isabel Arana.
What are your expectations for the first game?
“My expectations for the first game are obviously to win, but also to have fun and see everything in a positive way no matter what. I also hope that the rookies learn a lot from the game and use it to get better for the next game and the rest of the season,” said Senior Isabel Arana.
Have a great season, Mustangs, and congratulations to all the girls who made the team!
